Former Vice President Mike Pence spoke out on Sunday against continued efforts to keep Donald Trump off the 2024 presidential ballot, calling such moves “antithetical to democracy.”

What Happened: In an appearance with CNN, Pence attacked the attempt to remove Trump from the 2024 ballot using the 14th Amendment’s “insurrection clause.”

Following the Jan. 6 incident in which Trump supporters invaded the Capitol as Pence was certifying the Electoral College results of the 2020 election, federal and state prosecutors are attempting to exclude Trump from the preparation of 2024 ballots.

Despite being present in the Capitol during the Jan. 6 incident, Pence avoided calling it an insurgency, instead referring to it as a riot. He stated that excluding Trump or any other contender from the ballot violates the American people’s democratic right to choose their leaders.

“I have never called what happened on Jan. 6 an insurrection,” Vice President Mike Pence stated.

“I was present. The way it broke out was a riot, and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“And while I said that the president’s words were reckless — and I believe that history and the American people will hold him ultimately to account for his role in that day — I think these efforts to take the decision away from the American people are really antithetical to the very democracy that President Biden and many Democrats talk about wanting to defend,” Pence said in a statement.

Why It’s Important: The Supreme Court is now considering on Trump’s eligibility for the 2024 presidential election. This comes after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump would not be allowed to appear on the state’s primary ballot. The judgment might have an influence on Trump’s presence on ballots in multiple states, bringing uncertainty to the 2024 presidential election.

Pence withdrew from the race for the Republican presidential nomination in October of last year, citing financing issues and difficulty establishing momentum in the polls.

Pence also attacked Trump in March of last year, saying the Capitol disturbances placed him and his family in risk. “President Trump was mistaken. “I had no right to overturn the election, and his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable,” he had stated
